Fog Lit 2017 is now looking for volunteers!

Want to earn some free Fog Lit swag while hanging out with awesome authors and industry professionals? Become a Fog Lit volunteer! Volunteer rewards include access to the Fog Lit Hospitality Suite, a free Fog Lit Festival commemorative t-shirt, and a volunteer-only exclusive event.

Check out the position descriptions below and fill out the form to register as a Fog Lit Festival volunteer! There are positions open to both adults (19+) and youth (ages 13-18)!


Event Assistant

Oversees event and assists with duties assigned by the event coordinator.

  • Prepare food and snacks for attendees and authors.
  • Greet attendees as they enter the venue.
  • Provide programs for attendees.
  • Present a Visitor Survey to Fog Lit guests.
  • Attending to the needs of authors.
  • Various tasks aiding event leads.

Qualifications: Past volunteer experience and customer service experience are considered assets.

Recommended skills: Customer service, multi-tasking.
 NOTE: Certain events may require volunteers to be aged 19 or older depending on venue regulations. However, there are many events that are open to youth volunteers (aged 13 to 18).


Storytime Assistant

SEEKING YOUTH (ages 15-22): Aids with Storytime event at Market Square. Possible duties may include…

  • Aiding with Storytime events as directed by event leads.
  • Assisting children with crafts.
  • Provide festival information to attendees.
  • Set-up and take-down of Storytime activities.

Qualifications: Past experience working with children is considered an asset.

Recommended skills: Enjoys working with children, creative, organized.


Registration Desk Supervisor

Oversees registration desk located in the Saint John Free Public Library.

Possible duties may include…

  • Registering participants for workshops, poetry slams, or other Fog Lit Festival events.
  • Providing information, programs, and schedules to visitors.
  • Selling merchandise such as t-shirts and journals.
  • Attending to the needs of organizers and/or authors.

Qualifications: Past volunteer experience, past experience handling cash transactions are considered assets.

Recommended skills: Customer service, multi-tasking, mathematics, organized.


Author Handler

Attend to the visiting authors and presenters.

  • Driving authors to and/or from event venues.
  • Driving authors to and/or from the airport.
  • Accompanying authors and guests to various tourist destinations around the City of Saint John.
  • Ensuring authors have correct and up-to-date information; presenting them with author packages and schedules.

Qualifications: Must have a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record. Customer service and past volunteer experience are considered assets.

Recommended skills: Driver, personable, flexible schedule.


Committee Member

Assist in the organizing and planning of festivities.

  • Attending various organizing meetings prior to the festival.
  • Performing various technical tasks (i.e. putting up posters, event set-up and take-down).
  • Organizing author bags.
  • Organizing author packages and ensuring all details are correct.
  • Plan author schedules and ensure a plan is in place to bring authors to/from venues.

Qualifications: Past experience with scheduling, programming, and volunteering are considered assets.

Recommended skills: Organization, multi-tasking, teamwork.


Hospitality Suite Supervisor

Oversee the authors’ hospitality suite and ensure they are taken care of.

  • Serving authors beverages (including alcohol).
  • Maintaining the suite & ensuring it is kept as a comfortable environment.
  • Ensuring the authors are comfortable and assisting them with any needs they may have.

Qualifications: Must be age 19 or older. Customer service experience is considered an asset.

Recommended skills: Customer service, multi-tasking.


Workshop Assistant

Oversee various workshops.

  • Setting up food and beverage before the event.
  • Ensuring author requirements are taken care of.
  • Providing attendees with short surveys.
  • Distributing programs and other materials to guests.

Qualifications: Past volunteer experience and customer service experience are considered assets.

Recommended skills: Customer service.


Volunteers must be available for a minimum of four hours over the course of the festival. Please note that all volunteers are asked to attend a pre-festival orientation which will take place within two weeks prior to the festival.
